Entries sought for cancer reporting prize

Regional newspaper journalists are being invited to enter a competition which recognises excellence in the reporting of lung cancer issues.

The Global Lung Cancer Coalition has launched the 2007 Lung Cancer Journalism Awards, and is looking for entries for the Best Consumer Article, Best Medical Article and Best Broadcast Report.

The competition is open to anyone working in the media who has written on any issues relating to lung cancer, as long as it is published or broadcast between September 1, 2006 and September 1, 2007.

The closing date for entries is September 28 and winners will be announced in November.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in both men and women, with more than 1.2m new cases of lung and bronchial cancer diagnosed worldwide each year, but the GLCC says that, despite its widespread nature, lung cancer is often forgotten and under-recognised.

Each winner will receive a €7000 research grant to further individual reporting of the disease.

Last year's winners included Julia Llewellyn Smith, for her article You Don't Have to Smoke to Get Lung Cancer', which appeared in the Sunday Telegraph.
