Mail crowned Yorkshire Newspaper of the Year for third time

The Hull Daily Mail has been named Newspaper of the Year at the Yorkshire Press Awards for the third time.

The title picked up the award during a ceremony at the Thorpe Park Hotel and Spa in Leeds last night, having previously won the title in 2003 and 2004.

Judges said Yorkshire's best selling daily paper was a "superb package of dynamic journalism, trenchant comment, hard hitting campaigns and comprehensive background features".

The paper also won Front Page of the Year, with a P1 which showed a woman injured in the July 7 bombings being helped by a stranger, and Mail journalist Rick Lyon won News Reporter of the Year (Daily).

The Yorkshire Newspaper of the Year (Weekly) title went to the The Press, Dewsbury, with judging calling it an "outstanding weekly paper full of attitude and authority".

Tom Richmond from the Yorkshire Post won the Yorkshire Journalist of the Year title, described by judges a "consistent all-rounder".

They said he displayed a breadth of talent across a range of subjects, and informed readers in an easily understood way with a writing style that appeals to a wide audience.

Alexandra Fredman from the Whitby Gazette and Anna Smith from the The Star in Sheffield were jointly named Young Journalist of the Year.

As part of their prize they will be given the chance to spend a week with the breaking news team at the San Diego Tribune in California.

The event was hosted by Harry Gration, presenter of BBC Look North.
