'Plain English' award for Evening News

The Edinburgh Evening News has been recognised for its crystal-clear reporting, with an award from the Plain English Campaign.

The paper picked up the Best Regional Newspaper prize at a ceremony in London where editor John McLellan and news editor Euan McGrory received the award from journalist and broadcaster Matthew Parris.

Judges said of the paper: "With people relying more and more on the Internet and 24-hour television when it comes to current affairs, it can be hard for local newspapers to get a look-in.

"This colourful newspaper is well written and well laid out. It has a popular feel, and features quality reporting across all areas, from local and world news to non-league Scottish football."

Winners are chosen for clarity of reporting and work done to expose 'gobbledygook'.

Evening News editor John said: "It's a great honour for everyone on the Evening News to receive recognition for all the hard work that goes into making each edition of the paper as readable as possible."

The Plain English Campaign is a pressure group fighting for public information to be written in plain English.

It has more than 10,000 registered supporters in 80 countries.
