Two regional newspaper journalists were among the winners at a medical journalism awards event.

Mark Nicholls, of the Eastern Daily Press, and Emma Brady, from The Birmingham Post, both scooped top honours and cash prizes.

Mark won £1,000 for his feature '£30m Norfolk NHS crisis', in the financing healthcare section.

Emma was named Best Newcomer (Consumer) and won £750 for her story, 'Internet plea to pay for kidney operation'.

The Best Newcomer (General Medical) was Lyndsay Moss, of the Press Association, for 'Fertility tourism warning as donor anonymity ends'. She won £750.

The Norwich Union Healthcare Medical Journalism Awards celebrate the very best of journalism in the healthcare arena and the critical role that journalists play in educating and informing audiences.

The winners came from a wide range of media and were announced at a ceremony in London.

Graham Boffey, managing director of Norwich Union Healthcare said: "I have enjoyed reading through the entries and yet again the standard of journalism has been both impressive and educational.

"The world of health and medicine continues to evolve at a more hectic pace - the challenge to report clearly and effectively on increasingly complex issues is tougher than ever."

The Awards are now in their fourteenth year of sponsorship by Norwich Union Healthcare, and are administered in conjunction with the Medical Journalists' Association.
