Post reporter rewarded for outstanding writing

University of Central Lancashire journalism graduate Stephanie Cartwright has won the first Alan Burgess award for her outstanding writing.

The Lancashire Evening Post launched the award to honour the memory of Alan Burgess who was a journalist and executive on the paper.

Alan, who died of cancer, had a rare talent for humorous writing; for journalism in its most entertaining form. He was also an all-rounder and had been education correspondent, news editor, executive features editor and more.

While Alan was suffering from illness, he still kept writing his irreverent TV column Burgess on the Box.

"It is a great honour to win an award which encourages students to get their work published in the paper," Stephanie said.

Having received a trophy and a £300 cheque, Stephanie wants to move back to the northeast and is looking for a journalism job in that area.

The award celebrates the best in student journalism and is presented to the university’s top student journalist each year.

All of the Department’s journalism students can put themselves forward for the award by entering five stories, one of which must have been published by Post.

Senior lecturer in newspaper journalism Kate Jenner said: "It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to have their work recognised."
