Prize-winning double for Cumbrian newspapers

Staff at the News & Star and The Cumberland News are celebrating after winning both the Daily and Weekly Newspaper of the Year prizes at the North West Newspaper Awards.

The newspapers, which are written and edited by the same team of journalists, picked up the awards for their coverage of the Carlisle floods.

Cumbrian Newspapers editorial director Keith Sutton, who has edited both newspapers since 1990, said: "The floods were devastating for our city and we take no glory in the events, but in the journalistic standards of our newspapers that provided the information and news that our readers desperately needed.

"It is always our ambition to provide the best and the most thorough news coverage."

Also doing the double at the North West Newspaper Awards was the Lancashire Evening Post.

Its reporter Nick Owens was named News Reporter of the Year and his colleague Ian Robinson collected the award for Photographer of the Year.
