The Citizen picks up Regional Newspaper of the Year prize

The Citizen in Gloucester has been named Regional Newspaper of the Year at the 2005 Newspaper Awards.

The title picked up the award during a ceremony at the London Hilton on Park Lane last night, at the competition dedicated to newspaper production.

The daily newspaper beat competition from fellow Northcliffe titles the Western Daily Press and Leicester Mercury, which were both named runners-up, and the Reading Evening Post, Liverpool Daily Post and Manchester Evening News which had also been nominated.

In the Regional Weekly Newspaper of the Year category The Oxford Times won through, beating the Watford Observer and Surrey Advertiser which claimed second and third place respectively.

And Tindle Newspapers owner Sir Ray Tindle was named Personality of the Year by organisers The Production Journal.

In other categories regional titles faced competition from national newspapers, but the Nottingham Evening Post beat titles such as the Sunday Times to pick up Most Innovative Technology of the Year for its hands-free ad production.

And in the Best Weekly Newspaper on the World Wide Web category Newsquest's Thisiswiltshire and Archant's Ham & High were named joint winners.
