Journalists are being invited to enter a new awards scheme which will recognise the positive reporting of young people and youth-related issues.

The scheme is a bid by Young People Now magazine to encourage the media to look for positive story angles when writing about those between the ages of 11 and 25.

It follows a report published earlier this week which revealed that more than 70 per cent of press articles about young people are negative.

The Positive Images Awards are open to all journalists working in the UK media, with two categories, for best news report and best feature, specifically aimed at the regional press.

There will also be categories open to radio and TV, as well as awards for the most youth-friendly local council and the young person and youth group deemed to have been most proactive in their efforts to promote positive images of young people.

A panel of experts will judge the awards, with two runners-up and and a winner chosen in each category.

All finalists will be invited to attend a presentation ceremony in London early next year, when the winners will be announced.
