Mercury earns business award

The Leicester Mercury has won an award for its contribution to the enhancement of local Asian businesses.

The paper was honoured with the public service gong at the Leicestershire Asian Business Association's 20th Anniversary Business Appreciation Awards.

Mercury deputy editor Kay Drummond said the award was recognition of the paper's revamped business supplement which underwent a facelift in May.

She said: "The award is to do with our daily business coverage and new business supplement which has been developed and improved in the last few months.

"It is now full of colour and geared towards many aspects of business with an emphasis on business lifestyle.

"It's not just about how to make money but how to spend it with a more consumer approach that does not just look at the wheels of business."

Mercury editor Nick Carter picked up the award and paid tribute to the paper's business team, which is headed by business editor Andy Gilgrist.

He said: "This award is a tribute to the hard work of our business team, who produce what I think is the best business coverage of any regional newspaper."

Jiva Odedra, chief executive of LABA, said: "Business is a common language. The Leicester Mercury is doing a great job in bringing all the businesses in the area together."
