Talented students get their rewards

Some of the most talented student journalists in Scotland have been rewarded at an annual competition run by The Herald.

The Glasgow-based newspaper's Scottish Student Press Awards saw six prizes handed out, including Student Journalist of the Year, which went to Ruaridh Arrow from Glasgow University.

Ruaridh, who also scooped the best feature writer title, was praised by judges for a selection of articles which included an investigation on the racist behaviour of bouncers.

As part of his prize he will spend four weeks on a paid placement in The Herald's newsroom, and was also presented with £500, a winner's trophy and flight tickets to Toronto.

Other awards went to St Andrew University's The Saint, which was crowned best newspaper, and Edinburgh University's The Student, which won the prize for best design.

James Morgan, from Glasgow University, was named best news writer, while fellow Glasgow student Shaun Murphy won the prize for best online journalist.
