Regional titles set to compete at Newspaper Awards

Regional newspapers are set to compete against their national counterparts at the 2004 Newspaper Awards.

The shortlist for the competition, which is dedicated to newspaper production, has now been announced - and features a host of regional newspapers and publishers.

Among those in with a chance of winning are the Leicester Mercury, Reading Evening Post, Shropshire Star, Western Daily Press, Bournemouth Daily Echo, Newcastle Evening Chronicle, and Ipswich Evening Star, which will compete against each other for the title of Regional Newspaper of the Year.

In the Regional Weekly Newspaper of the Year category, the Bracknell Standard, Galway Advertiser, Tamworth Herald, Guildford Times, Farnborough Courier and Oxford Times are all nominated.

Regional newspapers also feature in other categories which are open to national titles. Candidates include The Herald, Reading Evening Post and West Sussex Gazette, which are shortlisted alongside The Observer, Daily Mirror and Garden News in the Most Outstanding Use of Colour category.

There are also two web-based awards up for grabs, for Best Daily Newspaper on the World Wide Web and Best Weekly Newspaper on the World Wide Web, and the nominations for these are due to be announced shortly.

All the winners will be announced during at a ceremony at the London Hilton on Park Lane on Wednesday, April 28.
