Award organisers ring the changes

Organisers of The 2004 Newspaper Awards have revealed a series of changes to the annual competition, including several new or revised categories.

Entries to next year's competition will soon be invited, with the entry form due to be posted on the award's official website, newspaperawards.co.uk, later this month and in the January issue of Production Journal.

Brand new for 2004 will be an Environmental Newspaper Company of the Year category, to recognises the importance of environmental issues and legislation on newspapers.

Other changes include the loss of the Best Implementation of CTP Technology category, as it is now the norm in the industry, making it increasingly impossible to judge.

Some categories have also been revised, so that the National Newspaper of the Year category will only be eligible for newspapers printed on a weekday and the Sunday category becomes The Weekend Newspaper of the Year, allowing for the growing emphasis on bumper Saturday newspapers, especially from the nationals.

Similarly, the Heatset Colour Supplement of the Year category will be split into two, with a national and regional title being handed out.

The 2004 awards will also see the prize-giving ceremony held at a new, bigger venue - the London Hilton on Park Lane - on Wednesday, April 28.
