North-west conference rewards editorial success

Editorial award winners stepped forward to receive recognition at the Newsquest Cheshire/Merseyside annual editorial conference.

The event doubled as a disaster coverage seminar with press officers and emergency planners giving presentations about their procedures in dealing with the press in times of crisis.

One hundred journalists and managers from titles in Cheshire, Wirral, St Helens and Sale attended the event in Runcorn.

Organisations included Manchester Fire Service, Liverpool John Lennon Airport, Cheshire Constabulary, the Environment Agency, Halton Borough Council, the Public Health Authority, Brunner Mond and the Government News Network.

Discussions covered the recent M56 crash, which killed seven people, and the farmers' protests at Shell oil refinery.

Catherine O'Connor, deputy editor of the Bradford T&A, gave a presentation on how her newspaper covered the Bradford Riots while Simon Phillips, a TV producer on Tonight With Trevor McDonald talked about his experiences in Baghdad during the gulf war.

The day concluded with an awards presentation to the following:

Commercial Features Designer of the Year - Winner Liz Payne (Warrington Guardian), runner-up Stuart Dean (Warrington Guardian);

News Designer of the Year - Winner Joel Sawyer (Northwich Guardian), runner-up Nicola Priest (Warrington Guardian);

Sports Designer of the Year - Winner David Lawrenson (Warrington Guardian) (judged by David Wadmore, Associate Head of Design, The Times);

Headline of the Year (judged by Kevin Young, editor of Lancashire Evening Telegraph) - Winner Steve Hallmark (Warrington Guardian), runner-up Runcorn & Widnes World team;

Trainee Reporter of the Year (judged by Steven Hughes, editor-in-chief of Bolton Evening News) Winner Anya Burgess (Wirral Globe), runner-up Stephen Bailey (Runcorn & Widnes World);

Photographer of the Year (judged by Martin Oates, Picture Editor, York Evening Press) - Winner Richard Holton (Sale and Altrincham Messenger), runner-up Nick Jones (Northwich Guardian);

Sports Reporter of the Year (judged by Andy Dunn, chief sports writer, The People) - Winner David Lawrenson (Warrington Guardian), runner-up Toby Robinson (Crewe Guardian);

Reporter of the Year (judged by Liz Griffin, editor of the Hereford Times) - Winner Luke Traynor (Warrington Guardian), runner-up Barbara Jordan (Runcorn & Widnes World);

Ian Ross (Congleton Guardian) scooped the journalist prize while the team award went to south Cheshire's Crewe and Congleton Guardian titles. The categories Journalist of the Year and Team of the Year were judged by Cheshire/Merseyside's managing directors, Chris Hughes and Jane Longden.
