Women writers are honoured

This year's Catherine Pakenham Award for young women journalists has been awarded to Karyn Miller.

The 24-year-old, who writes for the Mail on Sunday's Night & Day Magazine, won the award for her piece about the magic and intrigue of Clacton Pier.

She received £1,000 prize money and a commission to write for the Sunday Telegraph review section during a ceremony at The Hempel Hotel in London.

Four finalists also received £200 each. They were former City University student Lisa Murch, (24), English teacher Sukhraj Randhawa, (24), freelance Alice Tarleton, (22), who recently finished a course in Newspaer Journalism at Harlow College, and Louisa McLennan, (25), who works for Times Online.

Organised by the Sunday Telegraph, the award was set up in 1970 in memory of Telegraph Magazine journalist Catherine Pakenham, who died in a car crash at the age of 23.

The award aims to encourage young female journalists as they embark on a media career.
