Regional Press Awards winners announced

The Western Daily Press was a four-times winner at the Regional Press Awards 2003.

The paper impressed the judges to scoop Community Campaign of the Year, Photographer of the Year and Feature Writer of the Year, as well as the prestigious Daily/Sunday Newspaper of the year Award.

The winners of the Press Gazette-organised awards were announced at a gala lunch at the Hilton Hotel in London's Park Lane.

Among the other highlights were Scoop of the Year - won by the Grimsby Telegraph for its revelation that a local couple had been quizzed over the Soham murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman.

The Evening Newspaper of the Year was the Argus, Brighton, and Weekly Newspaper of the year went to the Kent Messenger.

Young Journalist of the Year:
James Ducker, Manchester Evening News.

Feature writer of the Year:
George Frew, Western Daily Press.

Specialist of the Year:
Sharon Edwards, Lincolnshire Echo.

Columnist of the Year:
Stacia Briggs, Evening News, Norwich.

Business and financial journalist of the Year:
Stephen Houghton, The Sentinel/Sentinel on Sunday, Stoke-on-Trent.

Team of the Year:
The Argus, Brighton.

Website of the Year:
EDP24 - Eastern Daily Press.

Front page of the Year:
Birmingham Evening Mail.

Supplement of the Year:
I Can Do That, Liverpool Echo.

Photographer of the Year:
Jon Mills, Western Daily Press.

Sports Photographer of the Year:
Mike Tipping, Evening Press, York.

Sports Journalist of the Year:
Martin Smith, The Star, Sheffield.
