Evening Press is Newspaper of the Year

The York Evening Press has been named Newsquest Daily Newspaper of the Year.

The accolade was one of 15 handed out at the publishing company's annual editorial awards, which celebrated the cream of the group's journalism.

Judges said the Evening Press stood out above many fine entries, and described it as "bold, challenging and successful".

They said: "This paper bears all the hallmarks of a newspaper that gets involved. The writing is uncluttered by clichés and to the point - well done to the reporters and the subs."

The award was presented as editor Liz Page left the newspaper for promotion to publisher of parent company the York & County Press. Under her stewardship, the paper has won many awards, including Newsquest Daily Paper of the Year 2000-2001 for its coverage of the disastrous floods of the millennium year.

Meanwhile the Ilkley Gazette and Somerset County Gazette were named the Paid-For Weekly Newspaper of the Year, for papers under 64 pages and over 64 pages respectively, and the Runcorn and Widnes World (under 64 pages) and Kidderminster Shuttle (over 64 pages) were named Free Newspaper of the Year.

More than 90 senior executives, editors and nominees attended the lunchtime event at London's Tower Thistle Hotel, which were compered by Sean Duggan, editor of the Surrey Comet, and group editorial manager Margaret Strayton.

The winners received trophies which were presented by chief executive Paul Davidson.
