Gazette named Regional Newspaper of the Year

The Blackpool Gazette has been named Regional Newspaper of the Year at the Newspaper Society's annual Newspaper Sales and Promotions Awards.

The award was one of many handed out at the Birmingham Metropole Hotel, in a ceremony attended by 300 people.

Other editorial winners included the Bristol Evening Post and Tamworth Herald, which were named Campaigning Newspapers of the Year in their respective daily and weekly categories.

Judges were impressed with the Evening Post's Save Our Streets campaign, which has helped reduce street crime by 20 per cent, while they described the Tamworth Herald's Enigma campaign as "a labour of love".

Chris Maguire scored another success for the Bristol Evening Post when he was named Journalist of the Year, and the Young Journalist of the Year prize went to James Fuller of the Cambridge Evening News for his part in obtaining an exclusive interview which scooped the nationals.

The annual event celebrates successful and innovative sales, promotions and editorial excellence by regional newspapers, and the winners were announced by Mark Ashley, chief executive, the Standish Courier and presented by Tim Bowdler, chief executive of Johnston Press and president of the Newspaper Society.

Successes in increasing newspaper sales were also recognised at the awards, with the South Wales Argus picking up a hat-trick of gongs, including the Northcliffe Newspapers special merit award for daily newspapers that have achieved consistent growth over a three-year period.

The newspapers were judged by base sales, news trade and subscription copies only, with all bulk sales, including special editions, excluded.
