Student journalists collect prizes

The winners of the 24th Guardian Student Media Awards have been announced.

Topping the list of winners was York Vision, the newspaper for York University, which scooped three awards, including best student newspaper and best website.

Judges praised its mix of lively news judgment, features and arts reviews which "attempted to connect with the outside world and presented a local line on international issues".

The winners of 13 categories were announced at the Embassy club in central London in a ceremony hosted by comedian Dave Gorman and television presenter Lauren Laverne.

An overall winner was also chosen as the Student Journalist of the Year. Alice Tarleton of Sheffield University's Steel Press picked up the prize and will have a six-week work placement at the Guardian and receive a £1,000 subsistence award to cover the placement.

Alice, the Reporter of the Year last year, also won the award for best travel writer and colleague Matt Withers was named Student Feature Writer of the Year.

Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger said the standard of entries has improved each year. Other judges included Jon Snow, presenter of Channel 4 News, Piers Morgan, editor of the Daily Mirror, Mark Frith, editor of Heat magazine and Jo Elvin, editor of Glamour.
