Three-up for Ali

Southern Daily Echo chief feature writer Ali Kefford has been shortlisted for the Desmond Wettern Maritime Media Award - for the third year in succession.

Ali, (31), who has been with the Southampton-based daily paper for three years, is among the finalists for pieces she filed from on board HMS Southampton in the Arabian Gulf this spring.

"I can't believe it, I'm really thrilled," she said.

  • Ali joined the Type 42 destroyer while she was part of Operation Veritas, helping launch Royal Marine commandos into Afghanistan as part of the war against terrorism.

She has previously reported from the ship during a South Atlantic deployment, visiting Brazil and the Falkland Islands.

The annual award is in memory of acclaimed former Daily Telegraph naval correspondent Desmond Wettern.
