Top prizes for Devon lensman

The head of the North Devon Journal photographic team has won two of the top three prizes in a regional portrait competition.

Mike Southon, who also runs his own studio in Newport, scooped the awards in the Master Photographers Association competition's open category.

The contest was open to professional photographers from across the Westcountry.

Mike's friend and colleague Phil Flowers from Somerset claimed first prize.

Mike said: "I was 'forced' to enter this competition by my colleagues. I find competitions a bit nerve-wracking and avoid them if I can.

"I was hoping I would win because you always enter pictures you feel comfortable with.

"This competition was judged by Peter Ellis, a particularly well respected member of our profession, so these awards mean a great deal.

"It is obviously nice to have your work recognised before your peers."
