Award first for newspaper

The Evening Times in Glasgow has received an award from the city's Lord Provost - making it the first newspaper to receive such an honour.

Editor Charles McGhee accepted the medal - which recognises the paper's commitment to Glasgow - from Lord Provost Alex Mosson during a ceremony in the city chambers.

Praising the newspaper, Mr Mosson said: "Its coverage of Glasgow, the city life from business to sports to the council, is second to none.

"This award is not because the Evening Times writes nice things about the council - sometimes it does but sometimes it does not.

"It is because it is fair in its comment, criticising us when it feels we have got it wrong."

Mr McGhee said the paper and the council shared the common cause of campaigning for a better future for Glasgow.

He said: "With 95 per cent of our readers - nearly 250,000 people - living in the greater Glasgow area, we regard our newspaper as a vitally important public voice right at the heart of the community."
