Medical Journalism Awards

Three journalists from the regional press are among those honoured at the Medical Journalism Awards.

This year was the 10th anniversary of the awards, run jointly by Norwich Union Healthcare and the Medical Journalists' Association.

They recognise journalists who help readers understand the complex fields of health and healthcare finance.

Reg Little, chief reporter and feature writer for the Oxford Times won one of the three top consumer prizes of £1,000 for a feature about a permanent artificial heart being fitted inside a patient whose own heart was almost destroyed by disease.

Judges said the article brought a human dimension to a medical world first.

Nottingham Evening Post health correspondent Madeleine Brindley won the General Medical Journalism Young Entrant category.

She scooped a £500 prize for her piece on Prodigits - a new form of bionic hand for children which went on trial at a Nottingham hospital last November.

Judges said Madeleine's piece on five children testing out the arms was a story to warm the heart.

Jenny Hudson from the Birmingham Post received a commendation in the same category.
