The winners of the third annual National Student Journalism Awards, sponsored by The Independent, have been announced.

Among them was Durham University's Palatinate, which won the coveted award for best student newspaper 2001 at a ceremony at King's College, London, attended by hundreds of student journalists.

Presenting the trophies, Donald Macintyre, The Independent's political commentator, said: "The best student papers give a real sense of the issues that are exercising students on campus, whether they be vice-chancellors' pay or rent increases.

"They are well written, have ambition and are presented with flair."

The awards are organised jointly by the Independent and the National Union of Students, and the winners were chosen from 369 entries by judges including experienced newspaper and magazine editors and the winners of last year's awards.

NUS president Owain James said: "The standard of student journalism continues to improve year on year and I extend my congratulations to all those who have been recognised by the team of expert judges."

Winners received £400 and the chance of work experience at The Independent's offices, and runners-up received £200.
