The winners of the Newspaper Society's Weekly Newspaper Awards 2001 have been announced.

Among the winners was the Milton Keynes Citizen, which won the Free Weekly Newspaper of the Year award for the second year running, and the West Briton which took the title of the Paid-for Weekly Newspaper of the Year.

Judges said the Citizen was a fantastic all-round newspaper which continued to do everything well and was all the reader needed, and described the West Briton as a fantastic newspaper that was a great, clean read.

The winners were announced by Paul Kinvig from the Hampshire Chronicle during a black tie dinner at the Royal York Hotel in York and Edwin Boorman, president of The Newspaper Society, presented the awards.

The awards were split into 29 categories, recognising outstanding journalism, photography, advertising and innovation.
