Guardian Student Media Awards winners are named

Honours were divided between two Oxford rivals at a closely-fought Guardian Student Media Awards.

Cherwell scooped two awards at the event, in Covent Garden, but its close rival Oxford Student was voted awarded student newspaper of the year.

The judges described the winner as "consistently readable, with a strong, confident personality - it broke stories with impact".

The awards, in their 23rd year, attracted a record number of entries and the judges included Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger and Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair's director of communications.

Impact (Nottingham University) won magazine of the year for its "great design and great articles", and the Cherwell staff Olivia Arthur and Mark Hodgkinson were named photographer of the year and sports journalist of the year.

Steel Press (University of Sheffield) won most awards, including reporter of the year, student travel writer of the year and the diversity award.

The overall award for writing was shared by Faisal Al Yafai (Steel Press) and Olav Bjortomt (Platform).
