A high standard of entries caught the judges' eyes when they were shortlisting the The Independent and the National Union of Students' student journalism awards.

Winners stand to take home £400, and runners-up £200 - but more importantly will receive the prestige of getting a chance to kick-start their media careers.

From a total 369 entries, the most popular category was Best Student Feature Writer, attracting 95.

The UEA's Concrete along with Impact, from the University of Nottingham, are both nominated for five awards.

NUS president Owain James said: "The standard of student journalism continues to improve year on year and I extend my congratulations to all those who have been recognised by the team of expert judges."

The judges include experienced newspaper and magazine editors and the winners of last year's awards.

They comprise Jan Thompson, managing editor of The Independent, NUS national secretary Ben Monks, New Statesman editor Peter Wilby and Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, of the Independent.

The winners and runners-up will all be announced at a gala awards ceremony in London later this month.
