Evening Press leads the pack

The Evening Press at York has been voted Daily Newspaper of the Year in a prestigious national competition.

The paper's campaigning stance and its coverage of last year's floods helped it defeat intense rivalry from dailies all over the country to clinch the title.

The honour was one of three picked up by the Evening Press at the Newsquest Editorial Conference and Awards in Southampton.

Editors from across the group were there to hear presentations on the industry and an insight into the burning issues that are dominating their coverage of news.

Perry Austin-Clarke, (Bradford Telegraph and Argus) addressed the conference on how his staff are walking the race tightrope, Simon Bradshaw (The Argus, Brighton) explained how to escape from jail, after his brush with the law over a Section 39 order earlier this year, and Alan Cleaver (Hampshire Chronicle) looked at the high-tech future of news delivery.

Other presentations discussed future industry trends, community coverage, research and an "Ask the Panel" section, and speakers included ITN's Nicholas Owen, Gannett senior vice president Phil Currie, and Doug McCorkindale, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Gannett.

  • The gala evening meal was followed by speaker Kelvin MacKenzie, most famously of The Sun, and more recently chairman and chief executive of The Wireless Group plc, which operates TalkSPORT and Wave 105, among others.
