Award success for Evening Post's Mhairi

A reporter from the Nottingham Evening Post has been highly commended in one of the country's top writing competitions, for the second year running.

Mhairi McFarlane, (25), was a runner-up in the Sunday Telegraph Catherine Pakenham award.

She was presented with a £200 cheque by Private Eye editor Ian Hislop at a ceremony in London.

Laura Smith, a former Evening Post reporter was also highly commended, and the overall prize was won by Alice Wignall of South East London.

The award was set up in 1970 by the family of Catherine Pakenham, who was a journalist on the Telegraph Magazine, following her death in a car crash.
