Mercury picks up award for charity work

The Leicester Mercury has been honoured by the RSPCA for its support of the animal charity.

The paper's editor, Nick Carter, received the RSPCA Regional Media Award for 2000 at the charity's annual general meeting in Newport, Wales.

The RSPCA praised the Mercury's campaign to raise £120,000 towards new kennels at Woodside Animal Centre in Leicester, its "pet of the week" column which helps to find homes for animals, and its objective reporting of the hunting debate.

Mr Carter said: "This is really an award that has been won by our readers.

"Without their untiring concern for animals, our support for the kennel appeal could not have been so successful.

"We know every time we carry a story of an abused animal needing help, our readers will rally round.

"We are very pleased to have received this recognition."
