Local, regional and national journalists from the whole of Scotland have been honoured at the 2001 Scottish Press Awards.

More than 330 journalists, representing 50 publications, entered this year's competition, making it the largest entry in the awards 22-year history.

The First Minister, Henry McLeish presented 17 awards to Scotland's top journalists at a ceremony at Glasgow's Hilton hotel.

Among the winners were Emma Nugent and Andrea Tuckerman of the Evening Times, Glasgow, who were jointly named Campaigning Journalist of the Year.

The winning campaign - to establish a Children's Commissioner for Scotland - was praised by judges as "one of the most important of the new millennium and an excellent piece of quality journalism".

The Scoop of the Year award went to Lorna Martin of The Herald for her revelation that Madonna would marry Guy Ritchie in Dornoch Cathedral last year.

The Sunday Herald picked up four awards, including the Sports Journalist of the Year award which went to Richard Bath, and the Financial Writer of the Year accolade which was awarded to Kenny Kemp.
