A former Daily Record journalist has received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Scottish Press Awards.

Alex Cameron, former chief sports writer at the paper, received the 2001 Scottish Lifetime Achievement Award from the Editor's Committee of the Scottish Daily Newspaper Society, which organises the event.

The award recognises his 55-year service to Scottish sports reporting.

John McLellan, Chairman of the Editors' Committee, said: "Alex has been a central figure in sports journalism in Scotland. His dedication and honesty combined with his own professional integrity make him a worthy recipient of this award."

Alex began his career on the local weekly newspaper, The Stirling Journal, before joining the Scottish Newspaper Services in Glasgow.

In 1952, he joined the Edinburgh office of the Daily Mail where he spent the next 16 years.

In 1968 he moved to the Daily Record where he remained until his retirement last year.

During his distinguished career he became one of Scotland's widest read sports journalists and has covered seven Olympic Games, Seven World Cups and Eight Commonwealth Games.
