What the judges wrote about the Local Reporting Award-winning entries.
Winner: Jo Ellis, Eastern Daily Press
This article was original, inspiring, engaging and reflected community spirit in a positive light.
It focused on a group of young men living on the Miles Cross Estate in Norfolk, who were unemployed and living in cramped accommodation. They took part in a training scheme which enabled them to gain vital building skills and build their own homes.
The scheme has helped the wider community and transformed the lives of the young people and their families.
Runner-up: Bryn Jones, Daily Post (North Wales Edition)
The judges praised the highly original content of the article, its clever link to Local Newspaper Week and the engaging way in which the piece encapsulated the inspiring work by young people in the community.
The focus for this article were four young entrepreneurs who are directors of their own co-operative record company in North Wales. They have created something which will not only benefit themselves but other young people in the community.
They offer access to jobs and improved skills and give local bands opportunities that they would not otherwise have to record their music.
Runner-up: Kerrie Turner, Leicester Mercury
This is a thought-provoking, "open editorial" piece which describes how this young woman managed to build her own self-esteem and confidence by volunteering to work with young people for a charity - Coping with Cancer.
She helped to run a youth group, which offers practical and emotional support, as well as social activities for young people who are suffering from or affected by cancer in her community. This inspiring article explains how satisfying and life-changing volunteering can be.
