The University of East Anglia has won the coveted award for best student newspaper 2000 in the second annual National Student Journalism Awards.
Concrete took the title at a gala ceremony at King's College, London, hosted by the Independent's political commentator, Donald Macintyre. Making it a double success, the university's TSW website also scooped the award for electronic publishing.
Hundreds of student journalists from across Britain attended the awards which are organised jointly by the Independent, the Independent on Sunday and the National Union of Students.
Winners and runners-up in 11 categories were honoured after being picked from more than 400 entries from dozens of campus publications.
Pugwash, the student magazine from Portsmouth University, won the award for best student magazine and a team from the newspaper Exepose in Exeter lifted the trophy for best student campaign.
Best small budget publication award was Oxford University's Isis.
The judging panel included Simon Kelner, editor-in-chief of the Independent; Peter Wilby, editor of the New Statesman; David Aaronovitch, Independent columnist, writer and broadcaster; Jane Bruton, editor of Living; Owain James, NUS national president; and Johnny Davis, editor of The Face.
The winners received £400, plus the chance of work experience at the Independent's offices, as well as a 21-day "busabout", hop-on hop-off coach pass worth £200.
Mr James, from the NUS, also hosted the ceremony, said: "It's an excellent range of winners and some outstanding people have won awards.
"The standard just proves the quality of the student media is very high.
"We are very grateful to the support the Independent has given to the awards and student media."
