Winners of the first NS New Media Awards

The category of Best internet site produced by a weekly newspaper in the Newspaper Society 2000 New Media Awards was won by kentonline.co.uk.

Judges said the winner showed a clean and simple design, a clear news section and text that was well-formatted for the web.

Gavin de Carle - who collected the award - said:"We're thrilled. We built an internet site that is so easy to use, anyonecan find their way around. You don't have to be technically advanced to useit.

"And as we develop the site in the future, we will meet the sameobjectives."

The rationale behind the site, explains new media editor, Mervyn Marles, wasthat it should not merely be a mirror of the KM's publications.

"The idea was to present itself, effectively, as another publication in theKM stable," said Mr Marles. "There were already a lot of purely news-basedwebsites around, but the guiding principle behind kentonline was that itshould provide a service to the people of Kent.

"The aim as we go on to develop the site is that it will be the first portof call for people who live, work in, or are visiting the county."

As well as daily news and sport, the site features a Kent businessdirectory, road reports, horoscopes, weather, a Kent-wide What's On guide, jobs, motors, property and freeads, and even a live link to HowlettsWildlife Park.
