Tom Stevenson, one of the judges of the awards, said: "There was great diversity and excellent standards of entries particularly in the best internet site category. This made us decide to add another category for those sites produced by a newspaper company for a niche target audience, rather than the broad interest areas covered by 'traditional' websites."
The Best niche internet site in the Newspaper Society 2000 New Media Awards was won by pinkun.com.

Judges said entries to this category were particularly high and proved very hard to judge. The winner is colourfully presented, has comprehensive content, is well-integrated with the community and is fun and imaginative.
Highly Commended was thebluearmy.co.uk by Northcliffe Electronic Publishing (Midlands).
A Certificate of Merit went to holdthefrontpage.co.uk, also published by Northcliffe Electronic Publishing (Midlands).
