The Belfast Telegraph was named as the Internet site of the Year at the first-ever Newspaper Society New Media Awards held at the St John's Swallow Hotel in Solihull.

Judges said that the site - also named as Best Internet site produced by a daily newspaper - demonstrated great depth of content and provided numerous interactive features ensuring it remained at the forefront of technological development.
It was one of 11 categories in the awards, although one of them - Most Commercially Successful Digital Publisher - received no entries, and judges felt that the standard of entries in the category for best online shopping/e-commerce service was too poor to announce a winner. However, Newsquest was highly commended for its Shoppersworld.co.uk website.
