Hard work in the world of student journalism has been rewarded at the Guardian Student Media Awards.
Competition was fierce nationwide for the awards, which were the climax of the Guardian Student Media Conference.
The award winners were decided by a panel including Alan Rusbridger, editor of The Guardian; Mirror editor Piers Morgan; Jon Snow, of Channel 4 News; Jeremy Vine from Newsnight; James Brown, founder editor of Loaded; Martha Lane Fox of lastminute.com and comedian and broadcaster Mark Thomas.
The winners were:
- Student Newspaper of the Year: Sheffield University's Steel Press;
- Student Reporter of the Year: Guy Adams, Sheffield University;
- Diversity Award: Faisal Yafai, Sheffield University;
- Student Photographer of the Year: Thomas Davey, Nottingham University;
- Student Magazine of the Year: Isis, Oxford University;
- Student Website of the Year: Hullwired (Hull University);
- Student Feature Writer of the Year: Adam Blenford, Leeds University;
- Student Critic of the Year: John Kelly, Edinburgh Trinity University;
- Student Travel Writer of the Year: Polly Curtis, Leeds University;
- Student Publication Designer of the Year: Bruce McVean, Micah Purnell, Jane Hilder, Manchester Metropolitan University;
- The Shoestring Award: Edinburgh Student, Edinburgh University;
- Student Sports Journalist of the Year: James Mythen, LSE;
- Student Campaign of the Year: Richard Thurston and Jared Wilson, Exeter University.
The winners have been awarded prizes including cash, European flights,courtesy of Go, and all-important work experience.
