Press spending brings its reward

Investment at print centres for the Express & Star has reaped rewards, with the paper scooping a coveted printing prize.

The Wolverhampton paper has been presented with the Roy Thomas Award for Colour Printing, a trophy recognised as the printing industry's national standard.

The Express & Star beat national newspaper printers for the award, which has followed a £35m investment at the paper's Wolverhampton and West Bromwich print centres.

Express & Star chairman Douglas Graham said: "A major part of the investment has involved installing colour towers at both these centres. I am delighted our efforts have been recognised by the industry.

"That work is still going on, and is due to be completed early next year. It enables us to provide first-class quality colour in our many supplements and on the news and sports pages.

Richard Green, Express & Star works and technical director, added: "It has also involved a huge amount of hard work and dedication from the press crews and maintenance teams at Wolverhampton and West Bromwich. This award is very much the result of a team effort."

The judges awarded the prize after seeing the September 19 edition, which featured colour photographs of an accident at Oldbury when a bus crashed down an embankment.

Copies of the Sporting Star and The Business supplement during the same week were also submitted.
