Veteran BBC Television foreign correspondent and newsreader Michael Buerk is to be guest of honour at this year's Yorkshire Bank Northern Business Journalist of the Year Awards dinner.

The dinner takes place at the Jarvis Piccadilly Hotel, in central Manchester, on Thursday 16 November. All bona fide entrants to the awards are invited to the complimentary dinner, but entries close on Friday September 15.

Awards are made under the scheme in three categories: newspaper, magazine and broadcast, and business journalists based between the Trent and the Scottish border can enter any or all of them.

The first prize winners in each category pick up a cheque for £400, with the runners-up receiving £100 and those commended a bottle of champagne. All the prize winners also receive framed certificates.

This is the second year in which Yorkshire Bank has sponsored the awards, the most prestigious of their kind outside London.

He has reported from more than 50 countries during his time as a journalist and will go down in history as the man whose heart-rending reports from Ethiopia during the famine in 1984 led directly to the development of Band Aid. We're sure journalists will want to question Michael and hear him recount some anecdotes from his wealth of journalistic experience.

"We would, though, reiterate that the closing date for entries is now looming. It would be a great shame if any eligible journalist missed out on a memorable evening because they failed to get their submission to us on time."
