The BT/Society of Editors Newcomer of the Year Award, which recognises the work of those who have been in the industry for two years or less, was one of the most hotly-contested categories. The winner, with her coup that BNFL were to be awarded a £2 billion contract - coming a week before the House of Commons announcement, was Krissy Lloyd of the Basingstoke Gazette. Runners-up were Amanda Wilkins of the Eastbourne Gazette & Herald and Richard Midson from Thames Radio.
