Category judges were so impressed by the standard of publications they decided to award four prizes instead of the usual three.

The top award went to the Somerset County Gazette with the three runners-up prizes going to the Somerset Guardian, the Weston & Somerset Mercury and the Wiltshire Times. Ken Bird is pictured receiving the paper's award from BT's Peter Kinsella.

Judges praised the Gazette for its "high story count, loads of letters and comprehensive coverage of local sport. But the front pages of the editions it submitted for scrutiny emphasised its strong campaigning qualities and showed that here is a newspaper that is prepared to stand up for, and fight for, its readers".
