This category, which recognises the work of those who have been in the industry for two years or less, again attracted one of the highest entries.

Judges acknowledged that the winner - Jonathan Gibson (pictured above) of Carlton Westcountry Television - is someone whose finely-tuned investigative instincts belie his relative inexperience. "All three of his submitted pieces would have done justice to a reporter of much greater seniority. And his trenchant report on the victims of abuse at the hands of Church of England employees was particularly praiseworthy," they said.

Runners-up were Megan Lloyd Davies of the Express & Echo, Exeter, and Julie Wheldon of the Western Morning News.
