Will Simpson, of the Big Issue South West, pictured above, shone in the 1999 BT West of England Feature Writer of the Year category taking the top prize.

Judges praised his articles about the West Country music scene which dominated his cuttings book and the fact that "he has been trying to loosen the shackles by writing about subjects as diverse as football and the eclipse."

He has been with The Big Issue South West for three years.

Runners up were Matt Reeder Sports Editor of the Evening Advertiser, Swindon, and Jane Gillard, formerly Chief Devon reporter with the Western Morning News who is currently away travelling.
