Weekly runs ‘most colourful’ front page ever to mark first pride festival

A weekly newspaper published its “most colourful” front page ever to mark its patch’s first gay pride festival.

The Fife Free Press splashed its current edition on the inaugural Fife Pride, which took place at the weekend.

The newspaper’s front page was decked out in the colours of the rainbow, traditionally associated with the LGBT community.

A feature inside the paper was equally colourful, with both pages designed by members of the Johnston Press design team.

Editor Allan Crow said: “The organisers have done a great job locally promoting it, we’d done a few stories in the run-up, and wanted to mark the weekend event with something different.

“Pride events are full of colour so we wanted to reflect that on the front page – and get across their key theme using the hashtag #BeProudBeYou

“We had various imagery based around the Pride flag as a backdrop, and worked with the organisers for a photo-shoot – just our luck the rain came down that day, but they were on the ball and came up with multi-coloured umbrellas.

“We put all the elements together, and Phil Smith in our design team came up with the finished front page, while Simon Bebbington did a smashing job on the feature which ran inside.”

Allan added: “It’s definitely the most colourful front page we’ve done.”

While it’s good news this regional newspaper is supporting the LGBT community, the fact it is making such a big deal of its front page only goes to re-emphasise how attitudes and prejudice in the regional press needs to change. If the front page was to celebrate a major music festival I don’t think they would feel as though it was such an achievement. When I worked in regional press most journalists would sneer and smirk at the suggestion of giving exposure to this sort of thing. I remember once the suggestion of turning some pages of the paper pink being laughed out as unsuitable for the “majority” of the audience. Well done Fife for recognising you have an LGBT+ community. It has most likely existed for decades before you came on board.
