Sports reporter takes on one of UK football journalism’s biggest jobs

Samuel LuckhurstA regional daily sports reporter has been promoted to take on one of the biggest jobs in English football journalism.

The Manchester Evening News has announced Samuel Luckhurst, left, will be taking on the role of Manchester United editor, which will see him lead the newspaper’s coverage of one of the world’s most well-known football clubs.

Samuel has served as a reporter on the club for the MEN since October 2014, and has produced a string of exclusives for the newspaper – most notably on United’s interest in appointing Jose Mourinho and their pursuit of midfielder Paul Pogba.

He takes over the Manchester United editor role from Rob Dawson, who has decided to move on from the paper.

Said Samuel: “It’s a privilege to lead the MEN’s United content at an exciting and challenging time in the club’s modern history.

“Manchester is one of the leading football cities on the planet and the MEN newsroom is the perfect place to develop coverage of United over the coming seasons.”

MEN editor-in-chief Rob Irvine said: “Samuel fully deserves his new role as Manchester United editor and will continue to play an integral part in making sure that the MEN maintains its position as the place to go to for great United exclusives, interviews and incisive opinions – all while keeping the fans at the very heart of what we do.”

Hell of a job. Keeping sweet with contacts at the club to help fill the daily space quota while not sucking them up to them too much is a difficult balance. Good luck, a great opportunity.

Why no explanation of Rob Dawson exit?
We’re told he’s decided to move on from paper. Was it his choice or was it made for him? We’re only getting half the story – I suspect the bit the MEN wants us to know.
Alternatively, if Dawson’s gone on to a better job, why not say so?
I’m sorry to say so but HTFP must do better and ask the obvious questions.
