Sports journalist celebrates 60 years with wife he met at newspaper

A former sports journalist who met his wife while working on a regional daily has celebrated his diamond wedding anniversary.

Journalist Craigie Veitch met Christian Marshall at the Edinburgh Evening News in the 1950s, and the couple have recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Craigie and Christian, who was a typist at the Evening News, say being “blessed with good health” has been the secret to the longevity of their marriage – which produced two daughters, Christian and Constance.

Craigie, now 88, spent 42 years with the Evening News and was its deputy sports editor at the time of his retirement.

Their daughter Constance said: “When dad came home on a Saturday night after work, his busiest day getting the Pink out, he would have a box of chocolates for mum and sweeties for Christian and I. He was like that.

She added: “When asked what was the secret to their years together, mum and dad both agreed it was down to them being blessed with good health which has allowed them to enjoy watching their children and grandchildren grow.”

The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with their daughters, son-in-laws Harry and Paul, grandchildren, Adam, Marshall and Iona and extended family and friends.

Both also have claims to fame outside of the newspaper industry.

Craigie shared an inkwell at school with James Bond actor sean Connery, while Christian, now 87, once danced with Lionel Blair during a short-lived career on the stage.
