A school newspaper was published as an insert in a regional daily as part of a project which saw pupils visit its office.

The Newminster News, which featured inside yesterday’s Sunderland Echo, was produced by students aged between 11 and 14 from St Robert of Newminster School, in nearby Washington.

The pupils visited Johnston Press North East’s headquarters as part of the project, while Gavin Foster, Johnston Press North East’s managing editor, also visited the school to pass on tips to them.

The resulting paper’s inclusion inside the Echo was advertised on its front page.

Said Gavin: “All of the pupils involved in the project were a credit to the school, and showed great promise.

“I’m confident there are some journalists of the future among them. This was a fantastic project for us to be involved in, and the students should be proud.”
