A regional daily’s coverage of its local football club is set to be immortalised in a new museum exhibit.
The Sunderland Echo exhibit is set to take pride of place at the Fans Museum, which opens this summer.
The museum celebrates the history of Sunderland AFC, and will feature a huge collection of memorabilia gathered by supporter Michael Ganley over the years.
The Echo previously supported the museum’s launch as part of its campaign to get Sunderland named UK City of Culture for 2021.
Managing editor Gavin Foster said: “This is fantastic news for the museum and city.
“The Echo has backed the Fans Museum as a valuable part of the community, and we hope to continue that partnership in the years ahead.”
Michael’s collection, which includes shirts, tickets, balls, medals and cups, has spent three years on the road visiting various events and charity fundraisers across the North-East of England.
He said: “By having a permanent home for our football collection, it will give us real scope to progress and develop the work we are doing with youngsters, and the elderly along with all community groups and the general public.”
Sadly, the only place you can see the famous Football Echo pink paper these days – the flagship of the Sunderland Echo’s coverage for more than a 100 years – is either in someone’s shoe-box in the attic, or….in a museum.
That proud local newspaper institution was part of the very fabric and culture of Wearside until very recently, but is now part of the community’s past history, rather than its continuing heritage.
