Editor to bring back literary lunches at regional daily

Martin BellA regional daily editor has revived the tradition of literary lunches at his newspaper after a two-year break.

The Yorkshire Post has announced the revival of its regular luncheons, with war correspondent and author Martin Bell, left, lined up as the first speaker.

The lunches were a regular feature of the newspaper’s calendar until 2014, but last year the Post joined forces with Harrogate International Festivals to bring back the event on a one-off basis.

Now editor James Mitchinson has revealed the luncheons will be back “for good.”

He said: “I was dismayed to discover upon taking The Yorkshire Post editorship that such a fondly-held Yorkshire tradition had withered on the vine prior to my arrival.

“I was convinced that we should reinvigorate the literary luncheons and having tentatively done so in 2016 the feedback and praise that I received on the day for its revival underscored to me that they must be put back on the calendar for good.”

Gemma Rowland, operations manager at Harrogate International Festivals, added: “We’re delighted to announce that The Yorkshire Post Literary Lunch will be a regular fixture.”

Strikes me as a high-brow indulgence.
Newspapers used to sponsor all sorts of things in the days when they were generating money hand over fist.
Does the YP literary lunch come with an orchestra who can play as the ship sinks?

Editors literary lunches went out with the 1970s this is clearly a real case of fiddling whilst Rome burns.

An editor reviving a literary lunch?
    Welcome to the 1960s
Can someone mention the real issues facing the regional press to the editor as they pass the port and cheese board
