Korean government prompts regional daily’s spelling correction

An email from the South Korean government prompted a regional daily to correct a story which featured an incorrect spelling of the Asian country’s national sport.

The Korean Culture and Information Service wrote to Coventry Telegraph editor Keith Perry on behalf of the nation’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to advise him on the correct spelling of martial art ‘taekwondo’.

In an email which was shared by Keith on Twitter, the organisation said it was “responsible for promoting Korea abroad by providing accurate, up-to-date information about the country” and that one of its main missions was to “deal with any inaccurate information about Korea in publications, websites and other materials”.

The article complained of was published on the Telegraph’s website on 29 October last year, with the sport being spelled ‘taekwando’ by mistake.

The email to Keith continues: “Even though this is not a huge mistake, we think it is important to provide readers with correct information in order to avoid any possible confusion and misunderstanding.

“Your Kind attention to this issue and your timely consideration of a correction would be greatly appreciated. We would be more than happy to help you if you need any further information about Korea.”

Keith posted on Twitter: “I have had an email from the Korean Govt (the friendly one). We spelt Taekwondo incorrectly. Corrected. That is serious monitoring.”

Great Britain has been successful at taekwondo in recent years, with Jade Jones winning gold medals in the sport at both the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.
